FAQ

The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholic men and women who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of All Graces have formed themselves into a Legion for service in the warfare which is perpetually being waged by the Church against the forces of evil.

The Legion’s aims are to:

  1. Increase the personal holiness of its members through the imitation of the virtues of Mary.
  2. Foster a deeper devotion to Mary among all people.
  3. Undertake various apostolic works.

There are two types of membership:

  1. First, the active member who attends a weekly meeting and does two hours apostolic work each week.
  2. Secondly, the auxiliary or praying member.

The duties of an Auxiliary member are:

  1.  The daily recitation of the Rosary.
  2.  The daily recitation of the Prayers contained in the Legion prayer leaflet called the “Tessera.”

No, these prayers are offered for the intentions
of our Blessed Lady.

It is the aim of the Legion to foster and spread devotion to Mary and this is done by asking the auxiliary members to offer these prayers daily for our Blessed Lady to do with as she sees fit. The Legion feels that in the disposal of these treasures, Our Blessed Mother will have regard for the needs of the Legion of Mary.

No, persons whose daily rosary is firmly bound to particular intentions may become auxiliary members without saying an additional Legion rosary.

  1. Auxiliary members share in all the prayers and works of the thousands of active members throughout the world.
  2. After death they share in the thousands of Masses offered each November by all the Praesidia of the Legion of Mary throughout the World for the repose of the souls of all active and auxiliary members.
  3. Auxiliary members gain all the indulgences attached to the saying of the Rosary and also to the aspirations and prayers included on the Tessera. For example, for each recitation of the first prayer, “Come Holy Ghost.” there is an indulgence of five years and a plenary indulgence once a month under the usual conditions, if recited daily. For each recitation of the “Magnificat” on the second page of the leaflet, there is an indulgence of three years, and five years on the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of any Saturday, and a plenary indulgence once a month under the usual conditions is said daily.
